Jade East
This is a sadly deteriorated sign for a group of duplexes on the east side of Athens, GA. The sign says "JADE EAST APTS." You can't really tell now, but the lettering used to have this faux-"oriental" appearance. Who knows when this place was erected--it's been there as far back as I can remember, and I can remember the lights mysteriously dimming on Jimmy Carter right after he mentioned JFK's assassination. Anyway, what I want to know is: was this place named after the character in Cheech and Chong's first movie? If so, that would mean it was built after 1978, and I don't think that can be right. Too bad about the sign, though.
The Future
This is part of an office complex in Athens, GA that was built (I think) in 1972. I have some sort of fascination with this place. It represents an earlier era's vision of the future. There used to be a cinema downtown that had this same sort of appearance. In fact, I've been surprised at how many buildings around town have this kind of concrete, externally corrugated appearance. This one, however, looks particularly cool. It's a shame that it's so underused now. Only a handful of businesses in there. I wonder what it was like when it first opened. Was any commentary made about it in the local community?
